Making a Mafia meal of it

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

I’ve always wanted to eat at New York’s Indochine. I’ve read all about it, the celebrated 25 years, how David Bowie and Iman live opposite and dine there regularly at their own table, how the fashionistas follow suit along with the celebrities and following in on their coat tails, mere mortals like us, hoping to get a table. Well the other night I had the chance and jumped at the opportunity.

Opinionated About Dining

Steve Plotnicki of Opinionated About Dining, has just released the results of his latest restaurant survey - The 50 Most Recommended Restuarants in North America and Europe.

This is Steve’s answer to flawed or inadequate dining guides and is a compilation of surveys from 175 diners drawn from members of the Opinionated About Dining forums, friends of Steve’s and acquaintances who are passionate about dining out and Internet food bloggers who were sent blind solicitations.

All participants were asked to rate restaurants on the following criteria:

Must Go
Recommended +++
Recommended ++
Recommended +
Acceptable
Can’t Recommend
Must Avoid

It’s a great list, compiled by real food enthusiasts with their likes, dislikes, preferences and biases included. The collective guide really does make up a valuable alternative to the ‘official’ editions from the likes of Zagats, Time Out etc.

It’s also free - thanks Steve!

Look out for more lists very soon.

Beyond Nose to Tail

Back in 1999, Fergus Henderson of St. Johns fame quietly released a book that has become a classic - Nose to Tail eating. This book is a fantastic collection of unpretentious, carnivorous dishes that makes the most of the animal we choose to eat. As he says, ‘it would be disingenuous to the animal not to make the most of the whole beast; there is a set of delights, textural and flavoursome, which lie beyond the fillet.’

Well, he is back with a new book, Beyond Nose to Tail, A Kind of British Cooking Part II. Due for release in August, you can pre-order on Amazon now with a chunky discount. The book looks full of classics like braised shoulder of lamb, pigeon pie, venison liver and pressed pig’s ear. As well as breads and sweets - sourdough loaves and lardy cakes and puddings.

Pick one up now as a real investment - the first edition of Nose to Tail I have is now going for over £100 on eBay!

Also, look out for the Bollinger Breakfast at St.John Bread & Wine on 24th May at 8am. A breakfast of champagne, kedegree and real coffee for £40 - first come, first served. Mail PBolly@stjohnbreadandwine.com of interested or call 020 7 251 0848.
